Sometimes mothers really do know best. That was the case with McKenzi Brooke, social media influencer and TikTok star who gained fame for her dancing, comedic dubbing and lip-syncing. “My brother [Reif Howey] had booked a TV show but I had to stay back at the hotel. My mom didn’t want me to sleep all day, so she gave me a few choices: read a book, go to a dance convention that was in the hotel, or start TikTok and make content. I chose TikTok and the rest is history.”
And that history includes over 7.6 million followers on TikTok, with well over 350 million likes on TikTok. She’s appeared in Insta videos with DJ Khaled, as well as in the music video for Preston C. Howell (of The Voice) for Preston’s song, “Supply & Demand.”
McKenzi recalls the first couple of TikToks that made her realize her vids were starting to resonate with people. “The very first one I did was a comedy video imitating Cardi B,” McKenzi recalls. “And that went viral. Then another one I did was with my brother Reif. That was when I started incorporating dance into my content. It was a Max & Ruby song.
From there, her popularity continued to grow, as did her follower numbers. Eventually, she and her brother were asked to perform with the Chainsmokers at the AMWAY Center, located in downtown Orlando, FL, in front of 65,000 people. McKenzi recalls: “We were just going to create videos with them at their Orlando concert. And then they asked us if we could go on stage and perform with them.” This singular event in one she’ll likely never forget, especially since she was able to do this with her brother.
The Future and Branching Out
McKenzi’s TikToks continue to grow in popularity. And now she has her sights set on other projects, including singing and acting. This makes sense, considering she looks up to the careers of Will Smith, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande—all of whom had mega successful acting and music careers. “It would be so incredible one day to be able to spend the day with any one of these amazing individuals,” McKenzi says. “We could make content and I’d ask for pearls of wisdom.”
Part of their advice might be something like, “Just keep doing what you’re doing,” because it’s been working so far! Her TikTok fanbase has been steady growing and she’s started gaining attention from other artists. Still, McKenzi isn’t resting on her laurels. She’s taking to heart the lessons taught by her idols, Smith, Cyrus and Grande. “I’ve started singing and my brother [Reif] has been rapping,” McKenzi says. “I hope we’ll be able to share our voice with the world soon. Right now, I’m on set with Brat TV and enjoying every moment of it. I love acting. I hope to do more next year, too!”
It’s official: McKenzi has been cast in season 2 of the BRAT TV show, Attaway General. The show is about a group of teenagers who must learn to work together as participants in Attaway General Hospital’s renowned volunteer program. Attaway General has already clocked in at over 40 million views with just one season.
We firmly believe that with McKenzi’s drive, determination and passion, these aspirations will quickly become reality.
Many are finding it hard to stay engaged, stay active and, more importantly, stay positive—especially with something as monolithic as the coronavirus. But McKenzi has some pretty solid advice to help: “Surround yourself with things that make you happy. Have a go-to person that you can always count on to make you smile and help you stay positive.”
Solid wisdom to go with titanic talent!
And finally, McKenzi delivers this wonderful nugget: “Don’t let anybody dull your light and always shine bright. Find your passion and let it shine.”
Shine on, McKenzi!
